Improving Speech, Cognitive Abilities and Swallowing
Speech Therapy
Speech therapy helps pediatric and adult patients with speech difficulties learn to communicate more effectively. But speech therapy goes far beyond language ability to help more patients. Speech therapy can help patients who have trouble swallowing because of stroke, esophageal cancer, or acid reflux disease. Speech therapy also can help restore cognitive abilities in patients who have suffered a stroke or a concussion.
Speech Therapy for Children and Adults
Communication disorders can affect anyone at any age. These disorders may be present at birth or result from an illness, accident, or disease. Speech therapy for adults is helpful for patients who have experienced:
- Traumatic brain injury
- Stroke
- Cognitive and communication disorders
- Aphasia
- Autism
- Parkinson’s disease
- Multiple sclerosis
- Language and voice disorders
- Swallowing disorders
Speech therapy for kids provides early intervention for children ages 0 to 3 who show symptoms of developmental delays or speech and language difficulties. Our speech therapists also work with those who have swallowing difficulties, autism, cognitive issues, memory problems, and more.
What Kind of Health Professional Provides Speech Therapy?
Penn Highlands certified speech-language pathologists, also called speech therapists, treat both children and adults. They identify, evaluate, and treat a wide range of speech, language, and swallowing disorders. All of our speech therapists are certified in VitalStim swallowing therapy, a type of external electrical stimulation therapy. They are licensed by the state of Pennsylvania and the American Speech Language Hearing Association.
What is VitalStim and What is it Used For?
VitalStim is a device Penn Highlands speech therapists use to treat swallowing disorders. The device delivers small, painless electrical currents through electrodes attached to the face and neck. The currents stimulate the muscles used in swallowing. While the electrodes are in place, the patient performs swallowing exercises to restore function.
Speech therapists must complete special certification to provide treatment with VitalStim. All Penn Highlands DuBois Speech Therapy Inpatient and Outpatient speech therapists are VitalStim-certified.
