Penn Highlands Mon Valley to Host Public Substance Use Disorder Meeting
Penn Highlands Mon Valley is hosting “Breaking Barriers: Understanding Substance Use Disorder, Trauma and Stigma,” a Substance Use Disorder (SUD) session to raise awareness of SUD, addiction and trauma on Thursday, March 28, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM in the Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center on the hospital’s Carroll Township campus. The public is invited to this free event. The session will feature guest speakers, educational resources and interactive activities aimed at providing information and support for those affected by these issues.
Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the impact of SUD, addiction and trauma on individuals and communities, as well as how to access resources and support services. By participating in this event, the community will gain a better understanding of these complex issues and how they can work together to address them and support those in need.
“We hope that people in the region will take advantage of this opportunity to learn about these issues that are impacting our families and neighbors,” said Kelly Macheska, Unit Director, Penn Highlands Mon Valley CNX Foundation Substance Recovery Unit. “Together, we can create a more informed and compassionate community that supports individuals on their journey to recovery and healing.”
The event is being sponsored in cooperation with the Mon Valley Opioid Coalition, University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy and the Westmoreland Drug & Alcohol Commission, Inc.
Parking is free and refreshments will be served.

In 2023, Penn Highlands Mon Valley opened the CNX Foundation Substance Recovery Unit — a Level 4.0 inpatient unit that provides withdrawal management and treatment services for people experiencing substance use disorders that need the highest level of care. The unit is the only Level 4.0 inpatient withdrawal and treatment facility in Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties. It also provides a 3.7 Bio Medically enhanced level of care which is the first of its kind in Western Pennsylvania.
This unit not only helps people in their first phase of withdrawal, it provides safe and expert care to people with a host of medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and behavioral health issues. As part of an acute care hospital, the unit has the resources of an Emergency Department, Lab, Medical Imaging and even an Operating Room, if necessary.
